Server Meltdown Part II: Electric Boogaloo

Well it looks like that new server isn’t going to work out as well as I thought it would.
In the past two days we’ve had two hardware “unresponsive at the keyboard” type crashes with the new dedicated server. I’ve fallen us back to our trusty VPS that the site was originally running on and will be canceling my dedicated box in the morning I think. Besides, with proper database caching I think that this server can handle a lot (and I am now properly caching this blog thankfully). Also, I don’t think that more than doubling my hosting costs is really worth it for a “nice to have” piece of equipment.
Onward to my development bits.
Done:
- Chicago! I’m happy with how it all came out and I’m looking forward to adding to it bits at a time like I’m doing with all of the other cities.
- Brought us back to the VPS.
- Did some work on my feed/spider system. Making it more robust so that I can handle more complex page designs without having to create multiple feeds for the same page (Thanks Chicago Tribune for forcing me to finally do that).
- Did some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tweaking including dynamic meta keywords on a per team basis and <h2> tags for the news headlines.
- Compulsively checked pageview stats…
To Do:
- San Francisco/Oakland. I’ve got a bunch of people waiting for their Bay Area news. I have the teams set up, just need to fill them in.
- More feed/spider system tweaks. AOL Sportsblog feeds have a penchant for having duplicate entries under different domain names for some reason. I’m already filtering dupe URLs in the same feed run, now I have to switch it up to filter on the URI instead I think.
- My feed administration control panel needs a revamp. I designed and wrote it myself but it’s turned into a gnarly beast now that we’re running over 220 feeds and dozens of news sources. I’ve enlisted my heretofore silent partner Jake to rewrite it for me. He’s handled most all of the front-end that you see on the site, now I’m going to take him out back behind the tool shed. SFO is going to be the last city/area that I put together with the current system hopefully.
- I’ve decided to add the Nets and the Devils to the New York market. Seems only fair since I’m putting Sacramento in with SFO. ETA is uncertain at this time. If you want to see them added soon you can drop me a comment or an email through our “contact us” links on the site.
- More SEO! I’ve resigned myself to the fact that SEO is just never going to be done.
